Understanding your
anaesthetic billing

Received a message or invoice from Anaemate? This page explains everything — what we are, what you owe, and how to pay it simply and securely.

Authorised by your anaesthetist

Anaemate is the billing platform used by your specialist to manage their practice. Any quote, invoice, or payment reminder you have received from us was sent on behalf of your treating anaesthetist, in accordance with Australian medical billing standards.

We handle billing
on behalf of your anaesthetist

Anaemate is a billing platform used by Australian anaesthetists to manage the administrative side of their practice. When your anaesthetist uses Anaemate, any quotes, invoices, and payment reminders related to your anaesthetic care come from us — on behalf of your doctor.

Your anaesthetist

Is a specialist doctor who administered your anaesthesia. They are a separate practitioner from your surgeon and hospital — and have separate fees.

Why you heard from us

Your anaesthetist uses Anaemate to send you quotes, invoices, and payment links. All communications come from Anaemate on their behalf.

Breaking down
what you pay

Anaesthetic billing in Australia can be confusing. Here's a plain-English explanation of the different components you may see on your quote or invoice.

1

The Schedule Fee (MBS)

Every medical procedure in Australia has an official "schedule fee" set by the government (MBS — Medicare Benefits Schedule). This is the reference point for all billing.

2

Medicare Rebate

Medicare will pay 75% of the Schedule Fee for private hospital services. This is automatically claimed on your behalf and deducted from what you owe. You don't need to do anything — your anaesthetist's billing handles this.

3

Health Fund Rebate (if applicable)

If you have private health insurance with hospital cover, your fund will typically pay an additional amount — often the remaining 25% of the schedule fee. This depends on your level of cover and your fund's specific policies.

$

Your Gap Payment

The "gap" is the difference between what your anaesthetist charges and what Medicare + your health fund covers. This is the amount you'll need to pay. If your quote shows a gap amount, this is what you'll be invoiced for.

No private health insurance? If you're uninsured, you'll generally be responsible for paying the full gap after Medicare. In some cases, your anaesthetist may be able to bulk-bill or offer a reduced-gap arrangement — the best time to discuss this is before your procedure.

Paying your invoice
step by step

Paying your anaesthetic invoice through Anaemate takes about two minutes. Here's exactly how it works.

1

Open the link in your SMS or email

You'll receive either an SMS or an email (or both) from Anaemate containing a secure payment link. Tap or click that link to open your personal payment page. The link is unique to you and valid for 30 days.

2

Review your invoice details

On the payment page, you'll see the breakdown of your invoice — the procedure, the date, and the amount owing. You can also see what Medicare and your health fund have already covered on your behalf.

3

Choose your payment method

Pay by credit card, debit card, or bank transfer. All card payments are processed securely by Stripe — a PCI-DSS Level 1 certified payment provider trusted by millions of Australian businesses.

4

Receive your receipt

As soon as your payment is confirmed, you'll receive an official receipt by email. Keep this for your own records or to claim on your private health insurance if applicable. The receipt comes from Anaemate on behalf of your anaesthetist.

You're done

That's it. Your anaesthetist's invoice is now settled. You'll receive a final confirmation and your records are updated automatically.

Questions from
patients like you

The most common questions we receive from patients about their anaesthetic bills.

Anaemate is the billing platform used by your anaesthetist — the specialist doctor who administered your anaesthesia during your recent procedure. Your anaesthetist uses Anaemate to send quotes and invoices to patients, rather than doing it manually. The invoice is legitimate. If you're unsure, check the invoice for your anaesthetist's name and provider number, and contact our patient support team who can verify the details.

No. Anaemate is a legitimate Australian medical billing company. Our website is anaemate.com.au and all official communications come from @anaemate.com.au email addresses or an Australian mobile number. If you're concerned, do not click any link — instead go directly to anaemate.com.au and use our contact details to verify your invoice. Never pay if you're not sure. We would rather you call us first.

Instalment arrangements are at the discretion of your anaesthetist. If you'd like to pay over time, please contact us using the details at the bottom of this page and we will pass your request to the relevant practitioner. Many anaesthetists are happy to make flexible arrangements when patients communicate with them early.

Please get in touch with us as soon as possible — the earlier you reach out, the more options are available to you. We can pass your situation to your anaesthetist who may be able to offer a hardship arrangement, a payment plan, or in some circumstances, a fee reduction. We understand that medical costs can be stressful and we always aim to find a solution.

Private health insurance covers most, but often not all, of an anaesthetist's fee. The "gap" — the difference between the anaesthetist's fee and what Medicare and your health fund pay — is usually not covered by insurance and is your responsibility. The amount depends on your health fund, your level of cover, and whether your anaesthetist participates in your fund's "no-gap" or "known-gap" scheme. If you believe there's been an error, contact us and we'll investigate immediately.

Yes. All payments are processed by Stripe, one of the world's leading payment processors and a PCI-DSS Level 1 certified provider. Your card details are never stored by Anaemate — they are handled entirely by Stripe's secure infrastructure. The payment page uses HTTPS encryption. You can also pay by bank transfer if you prefer not to use a card online.
